Recovery Plan
We understand that parents may be concerned about the learning their child has missed when they were not in school. We have put together a comprehensive recovery plan to support all children as they return to school using guidance from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
Tutoring
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) supports schools by providing access to high-quality tutoring to help pupils whose education has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Evidence (EEF) shows that tutoring can boost progress by up to five months, with extensive evidence showing that tutoring is one of the most effective tools to support learning and accelerate pupil progress.
At St Dennis Primary Academy, we run small group tutoring seesions delivered by a teacher for Englisha d maths three times a week. We also have a maths breakfast club and after school tutoring sessions in small groups delivered by trained Higher Level Teaching Assistants. They have a snack and a drink whilst learning and feel comfortable and supported by their tutors, who they know well from their classroom.
We use a range of strategies including revisiting previous learning on a unit to ensure children are at the expected level and have achieved previous learning targets. This enables them to come to the next stage in their maths learning with confidence. We also use children’s books and pupil conferencing to look for areas of learning that need consolidating.
We always carry out a diagnostic test at the beginning and end of each block of tutoring sessions which informs future learning.
